9 October, 2007 – Indian biscuit producer Britannia Industries said it plans to expand its operations in a bid to strengthen its domestic position.
The company currently has a 38 pct share of the market in value terms and has unveiled proposals to increase its capacity by 20,000 tonnes a year to over 450,000 tonnes.
The company said it wants to realise the investment programme of INR 1.3 billion (23.5 million euro) within the next six months.
At present, 90 pct of Britannia’s annual revenue of INR 2.2 billion (almost 40 million euro) comes from biscuits.
The Wadias family and Groupe Danone hold a controlling share in Britannia through their joint ownership of Associated Biscuits International.
The partners are currently involved in a legal dispute over intellectual property rights.
