Nov. 13 - Friesland Foods Domo has put its modernised factory in Workum for the production of whey-proteins into operation. The expansion of production capacity and the adaptations allow Friesland Foods Domo to better respond to the increasing demand for products that are used in infant nutrition, foods and dairy products.

The worldwide demand for dairy ingredients is increasing sharply. That is why the modernisation of the production facility in Workum fits so perfectly into Friesland Foods’ strategy, in which whey- and milk-based ingredients have been designated as one of the pillars of the company. Roelof Joosten, Managing Director of Friesland Foods Domo: ‘Given the current scarcity of dairy ingredients, the renovation of the Workum production facility is of key importance to Friesland Foods.’

Over the past year, €6 million has been invested in developing a new production line and further improving the quality of the product and the process in Friesland Foods Domo’s production facility in Workum. With the improvements, the production process in Workum now also satisfies the very stringent requirements that are placed on the production of infant nutrition. A new packaging line and packaging hall have also been built. The most drastic change, however, has been the construction of a production line for the new product DOMO Hiprotal 60MP.

Suitable for use in dairy applications such as yoghurt and yoghurt drinks, DOMO Hiprotal 60MP helps preserve the creaminess of products, while reducing the fat content. With this product, Friesland Foods Domo caters for the growing demand for low-fat ingredients; 1% of Domo Hiprotal 60MP replaces 3% of milk fat. The product is interesting from a technological point of view because the end product achieves a similar consistency using less protein. Use of the new protein concentrate results in lower ingredient costs and easier formulation (one ingredient rather than mixtures), while no mention of E numbers and additives on the packaging is necessary because DOMO Hiprotal 60MP comes from a natural dairy source.

Roelof Joosten: ‘In recent years, Friesland Foods Domo has progressed significantly in development, technology and production of high-quality wheyand milk-based ingredients. At the Workum production facility, we only make speciality products and are also creating ever more long-lasting partnerships with our customers. That is very important for the continuity of the company.’

A Friesland Foods Cheese production location is also situated on the Friesland Foods complex in Workum. In recent years, €30 million has been invested in, amongst others, increasing production capacity to some 60,000 tons of cheese. Per day, about 1.5 million kilos of milk is processed into cheese and whey. On flexible cheese production lines, the factory produces naturally matured, 12-kg Gouda wheels and 15-kg Gouda blocks, as well as Edam, foil-ripened cheese and Edam balls. Anker Kaas has recently started making use of a cheese warehouse with packing capacity and distribution centre on the complex.

In total, more than 150 persons work at the Friesland Foods complex in Workum.

Friesland Foods Domo develops, produces and markets high-quality whey- and milk-based ingredients, which it supplies to food and pharmaceutical companies all over the world. Friesland Foods Domo has production facilities in Bedum, Borculo, Dronrijp and Workum in the Netherlands and sales offices in Zwolle (the Netherlands), Malaysia and Great Britain, as well as a worldwide network of sales representatives and distributors. Friesland Foods Domo is a subsidiary of Royal Friesland Foods.
