19 November, 2007 – French retail giant Carrefour has turned down an offer from its partner Mestdagh to buy some of its supermarkets in Belgium, sources have claimed.
In June, Carrefour announced it wanted to offload 16 of its GB supermarkets because of increasing competition in the local market and that salaries are rising faster than sales.
Reports said Carrefour rejected the offer from its Belgian partner, which runs the Champion chain on its behalf in the country, because it preferred to sell the stores to franchisees instead.
Talks with franchisees were said to be at an advanced stage.
