26 November, 2007 – Carrefour has said it plans to reform its structure in a move that may result in the disappearance of its Champion stores.
The plans could see up to 1,000 Champion shops transformed by 2010, according to reports in the UK.
According to media sources, Chief Executive Jose Luis Duran said he would decide whether to implement the format change across France by spring 2008, but that it was likely the plan would go ahead.
It is believed the conversion costs would range from between 250,000-400,000 euro per store.
The French retail giant confirmed that its Hyper Champion stores would definitely be rebranded under the Carrefour name as there was no reason for the firm to have two hypermarket chains in France. The change of name was an opportunity for the company to speed up growth, Carrefour said in a statement.
