17 December, 2007 – Two of the UK's leading supermarket have issued a nationwide recall of naan bread over concerns the product could contain glass fragments.
Sainsbury’s and Morrisons have been forced to call back a number of batches of the speciality Indian bread manufactured by Patak’s Breads Ltd in Cumbernauld, Scotland.
The UK Foods Standards Agency (FSA) issued an alert saying: “The risk of glass being present is very low but if people have any of the potentially-affected products at home they should return them to their nearest store for a refund.”
The Morrisons products affected are: Morrisons 2 Plain Naan Breads, best before 26 and 27 Dec 07; Morrisons 4 Plain Mini Naan Breads, best before 24 to 26 Dec 07; Morrisons 2 Garlic and Coriander Naan Breads best before 24 to 27 Dec 07; Morrisons 4 Garlic and Coriander Mini Naan Breads best before 24 to 27 Dec 07.
The Sainsbury's brands affected are: Taste the Difference 2 Plain Naan, best before 20 Dec 2007; Taste the Difference 2 Garlic and Coriander Naan, best before 20 Dec 07; Sainsbury's 2 Peshwari Naan, best before 20 to 23 Dec 07.
A spokesman for Sainsbury's said: "The naan bread recalled is the naan bread found in the bakery aisle.
"As a precautionary measure, in terms of the supplier identifying a problem, we have asked customers to return any items that may be affected."
FLEXNEWS contacted Morrisons who declined to comment on the matter.
No other Patak’s, Sainsbury’s or Morrisons products are known to be affected, said the FSA.
Patak’s was established in England in 1957 and now distributes Indian food products, including curry pastes, sauces and pappadums, to more than 40 countries across the world.
