New Delhi, March 13 - The government on Thursday approved schemes worth 7.32 billion rupees ($181 million) to improve the quality of tea, coffee and spices output.
It earmarked 2.30 billion rupees for tea, 3.10 billion rupees for coffee and 1.92 billion rupees for spices.
"Improved price realisations owing to better quality of the tea produce both in domestic and international market would benefit the growers," a government statement said.
India is the world's second largest tea producer. But tea exports have been sluggish for the last one year due to competition from Sri Lanka and Kenya.
The additional funds for coffee will improve farm productivity and build greater capacity for Indian coffee producers, the government said.
It said the fund support for spice development will bring about greater value addition in spice processing and packaging.
