17 March 2008 – A Sainsbury's buyer is being investigated for allegedly receiving £3 million ($6 million) in bribes from potato producer Greenvale, UK media report.
Two men, later named as Sainsbury’s executive John Maylam and Greenvale operations director David Baxter, have been arrested on suspicion of corruption and money-laundering, a police spokesman was reported as saying.
Greenvale is the UK’s leading supplier of fresh potatoes and provides half of Sainsbury's potatoes, 190 million kg of produce worth £130 million ($261 million).
J Sainsbury plc is Britain's thrid largest grocer.
