Brussels, March 28 - Italy has carried out a product recall of mozzarella cheese made by establishments where samples were found to be contaminated by cancer-causing dioxins, the European Commission said on Friday.
"We had confirmation that the Italians have withdrawn mozzarella from the 25 companies which was found to be contaminated," a Commission official said.
Italy had also pledged to carry out "constant monitoring" of production sites and holdings to ensure that no further cases of mozzarella cheese were found where dioxin levels exceeded the EU's maximum permitted levels, the official said.
