Beijing, March 29 - China banned imports of Italian mozzarella and Singapore told markets to suspend sales on Saturday after Italy said some of the cheese might be tainted by dioxin.
Chinese importers must recall Italian-made mozzarella, the country's product safety agency announced.
Other types of Italian cheeses must also undergo laboratory inspections before they can be imported, the Administration for Quality Supervision Inspection and Quarantine said.
Singapore's food-safety agency asked supermarkets to suspend sales "as a precautionary measure" while tests for dioxin are conducted, said agency spokesman Goh Shih Yong.
Italy said this week some mozzarella from the Campania region of the country's south contained more dioxin than permitted. They said contaminated cattle feed might be to blame.
France barred shops from selling Campania mozzarella but rescinded the order after learning that brands exported to France were not affected by the scare.
Japan has also taken measures to stop sales of Campania mozzarella.
