New Delhi, April 15 - India's federal government might impose a temporary ban on basmati (aromatic) rice exports as part of its ongoing measures to tame surging inflation, the Economic Times newspaper reported, quoting unnamed government officials.
"The move is being considered as a short-term measure," said one of the officials.
Basmati rice makes up around 1% of India's total annual rice production.
Last month, the federal government banned exports of non-basmati rice and raised the minimum export price of basmati rice to shore up local supplies and control inflation.
