MSC Announces Acquisition of Whey Processing Facility in Mountain Lake, Minnesota from Protient Inc.

Dundee, Illinois, April 14, 2008 – MSC (Milk Specialties Company) today announced that its Nutritional Ingredients business has acquired the Mountain Lake whey processing facility from Protient Inc. of St. Paul, Minnesota. MSC is a leading manufacturer of specialty nutrition products, and is a large independent processor of whey in the U.S. The primary products of the Nutritional Ingredients business include whey protein concentrate, lactose, whey permeate, spray dried protein encapsulated fats and fermented products. The Mountain Lake facility is a food grade facility.

Dr. Trevor Tomkins, CEO, of MSC said, “This acquisition is part of our long term strategy to consolidate our position as a leading processor of specialty proteins for nutrition. We look to expand our manufacturing capabilities and product offerings through this acquisition.” 

Steve Hollins, Executive Vice President who runs MSC Nutritional Ingredients said, “Mountain Lake will greatly enhance our capabilities and allow us to enter new market segments.This is a well equipped plant and we have plans to expand production.”

The terms of the transaction were not disclosed. 

MSC, headquartered in Dundee, Illinois, has three manufacturing plants in Wisconsin, in addition to the new plant in Minnesota and employs approximately 250 people.Its products are sold worldwide into the feed and food industries. The company operates two business divisions: MSC Specialty Nutrition and MSC Nutritional Ingredients. MSC Specialty Nutrition focuses on the worldwide animal feed industry with its leading brands of animal milk replacers and its Energy Boosterâ fat supplement.
