China Lifts Ban on Italian Mozzarella Cheese

Shanhai, April 18 - China said it had lifted a ban on sales of Italian mozzarella cheese after receiving evidence from Italy's government and the European Commission that the product was safe.

Chinese experts found Italian measures to ensure the safety of the cheese were effective, Beijing's General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine said in a statement dated April 16 and seen on its Web site on Friday. It did not elaborate.

China banned sales and imports of Italian mozzarella in late March because of fears it might be contaminated by cancer-causing dioxins. It was one of several countries to take such action.
