Factory manager Peter McMorris told the local press: "Today's announcement brings to an end a period of uncertainty and will allow us to turn our attention to consulting on and implementing the changes that need to be made to secure the site's long term future”.

Meanwhile, the GBP 7 million investment will be used to improve the site's technological capabilities, adds the press.

Unilever employs approximately 300 people at the Purfleet plant, which was previously known as Van den Bergh Foods or Van den Bergh and Jurgens.

Purfleet mainly produces Unilever’s spreads such as Flora, Flora proActiv, Bertolli, Stork, and I Can't Believe It's Not Butter!

In September 2007, FLEXNEWS reported that Unilever would cut 315 jobs in Britain over a 12 month period as part of its worldwide cost-cutting programme.
