Report Highlights: ATO/Sao Paulo estimates coffee production for MY 2005/06 at 36.1 million (60-kg) bags, green beans, down 7.5 million bags from MY 2004/05, due to downswing of the biennial production cycle. The harvest of the 2005 crop is virtually over. Coffee exports for MY 2005/06 were revised downward to 22 million bags, down 21 percent from the previous MY due to lower product availability. Coffee growers have held stocks expecting higher market prices.
Production
The Agricultural Trade Office (ATO)/Sao Paulo has revised the Marketing Year (MY) 2005/06 (July-June) Brazilian coffee production estimate downward to 36.1 million bags (60 kilograms per bag), green equivalent. The reduction of 400,000 bags from the earlier forecast is due to weather related problems and lower than expected dehusking yields.
Robusta production is estimated at 10.1 million bags, down 4 percent compared to the previous 2005/06 production forecast, but up 9 percent from MY 2004/05 (9.3 million bags). The harvest period for robusta coffee ended in July for Rondonia and August for Espirito Santo. The harvest in Espirito Santo was delayed by rainfall and the quality of the beans was to some extent damaged by coffee borer (“broca”) and moisture.
Arabica coffee production is estimated at 26 million bags, down 8.3 million bags from MY 2004/05 (34.3 million bags). The harvest started in May for the major growing areas. The overall dry weather supported harvesting operations, which were virtually over in October. The quality of the coffee is good, much superior to the previous year when the beans were affected by rainfall during the harvest.
No changes have been made to area harvested or estimated tree inventory. The table below shows coffee production estimates by state and variety from MY 2001/02 to MY 2005/06.
