The new plant is part of Nestle's GBP 20 million investment plan to modernise the site.

According to the city’s press, Aero production has moved out of older buildings on the southern part of the site, which is to be re-developed with offices, retail outlets and new homes.

Attending the plant opening, York MP Hugh Bayley said: "It's very important that Nestlé are investing in the York site. They have made it clear that they have a long-term commitment to York."

Plans for the new plant were unveiled in September 2006, when the Swiss food giant also revealed that 645 staff were to be made redundant as part of its re-structuring. Nestle also said that the production of several brands, including Smarties, would to move abroad.

The news comes 2 months after FLEXNEWS reported that Nestle was understood to be hiring scores of skilled staff in York to help "drive the factory forward". The company reportedly has 70 to 80 job opportunities at the plant.
