29 April, 2008 – Authorities in Japan have found further Chinese dumplings contaminated with pesticides, sources report.
Some 39 packets of “gyoza” dumplings manufactured by Tianyang Food Co have been uncovered in a wholesaler warehouse in Osaka, west of Tokyo. According to reports, the police confirmed the dumplings contained traces of methamidophos – a highly toxic pesticide.
As FLEXNEWS reported in January, dumplings made by Tianyang were recalled by a number of major companies, including Japanese Tobacco and Ajinomoto, after 10 people fell ill and dozens more were sickened after eating them.
Chinese authorities who inspected Tianyang’s plant in Hebei said they found no evidence of contamination or malpractice.
The contamination scandal sparked a nationwide food safety probe of products from China and has resulted in Japan overhauling its scrutiny system.
