Centennial, Colorado, May 13, 2008 – Penford Food Ingredients, a leading manufacturer and marketer of ingredients for the processed food industry, and CP Kelco, a leading global producer of specialty hydrocolloids, today announced that they have entered into an agreement covering GENU® PLUS Carrageenan. Under the agreement Penford has the exclusive privilege to sell CP Kelco's specialty line of GENU PLUS Carrageenan to the meat, poultry and seafood industry in the United States. “By combining Penford's application knowledge and technical sales support with CP Kelco's technology and supply capabilities, we are creating a strong market partnership,” says Jane Schulenburg, Market Manager Americas. The addition of GENU PLUS to Penford's line of starches will broaden Penford's offering of natural and specialty ingredients for protein applications.
GENU Carrageenans have established a position in the food industry as high-quality gelling and texturizing agents. GENU PLUS in particular, offers unique functionality in certain chicken applications, such as rotisserie chicken. The National Chicken Council estimates that in 2008, more than 750 million chickens will be sold as rotisserie products. This includes 550 million sold through supermarkets and club stores and 200 million sold through foodservice outlets.1 According to research published by the Council, consumers’ love for rotisserie chicken has grown due to the convenience and good taste of this product.
“The protein industry continues to look for ’natural’ solutions that offer the functional benefits of modified ingredients to meet increasing consumer demand,” said Dan Brennan, Sales Director for Penford Food Ingredients. “Use of GENU PLUS benefits the processor through improved yields and the consumer by offering increased succulence in the finished chicken product from a label-friendly ingredient.”
