2 June 2008 – Local media report that some 50 workers have been made redundant at Best Bakeries' Hirwaun site, half the factory's workforce.
Three lorries parked outside the factory were set on fire a day after the news was broken out to workers. The blaze destroyed the lorries and thousands of pounds worth of stock.
The total cost of the fire is estimated to reach £100,000 (close to $200,000), bakery manager Steve Fogo was reported as saying. Police are treating the fire as suspicious and have launched an investigation into its causes.
The plant supplies products to Ferrari’s Fresh Bakery’s outlets. Best Bakeries, which took over Ferrari’s in 2007, has applied to go into administration.
