The French dairy giant said it would launch the new line in September in a bid to reverse a decline in product sales.

Sources quote Emmanuel Faber, the company’s chief operating officer, as saying it was a way of covering the widest possible spectrum of customers.

Market data analysts ACNeilsen said Danone’s dairy volumes sales had slumped in recent months as a 12% fall in February was followed by a 14% decline in March and then a further drop of 17% in May.

Experts have said sales of premium branded foods, such as Danone, have been hit as consumers turned to own-brand labels in a bid to economise.
