4 August 2008 – German sugar producing company Südzucker is said to be considering Ebro Puleva's sugar division as a potential takeover target, German media report.
There is competition, however. Fellow German Nordzucker and French Tereos have both expressed an interest in Ebro’s sugar unit, which the Spanish food group recently put up for sale.
Nordzucker recently beat Tereos to Danisco’ sugar operations, as reported on FLEXNEWS. Tereos abandoned plans to bid for Danisco Sugar, preferring to focus on alternative acquisition targets instead.
Südzucker is the European leader with a 21% share of the sugar market. The Danisco Sugar acquisition took Nordzucker’s share to 16%, whilst Tereos currently accounts for 11% of the European sugar market.
