New York, 25 August - Mars Snackfoods US has confirmed it will be changing the weight and increasing prices of some of its confectionery products in response to rising overhead costs.

The chocolate giant said the first of the changes will take place on 17 October as a result of soaring raw material and other production costs going up. More price and weight changes will take place at regular intervals until March 2009, the company explained.

A Mars statement said: "We have incurred significant increases in our costs of doing business, including raw materials, packaging and energy.

Mars declined to provide details of the changes but the move follows the 10% price hike by rival Hershey earlier this month, amid concerns of rising costs of ingredients such as sugar and cocoa.
