Spain: Dozens of Hepatitis A Cases Linked to Contaminated Shellfish from Peru

18 September - At least 40 people the Valencia region of Spain have caught Hepatitis A after eating contaminated frozen shellfish from Peru.

The region’s top health official Manuel Cervera confirmed this week that dozens of recently reported Hepatitis A cases were being linked to consumption of the frozen shellfish tellina from Peru.

Mr Cervera said that none of the case were serious or had required the victims to be hospitalised. He said the likelihood of more cases was not being ruled out.

The announcement comes just days after the Spanish food safety authority, AESAN, raised the alarm on the European Union’s Rapid Alert System for Food and Feed (RASFF).
