1 Oct Some Chinese cookies have been withdrawn from sale in the Netherlands after being found to contain raised levels of melamine, food safety chiefs have announced.
Chocolate and chestnut flavoured Chinese Koala biscuits have been banned from the Dutch market after the concentration of the industrial chemical exceeded the 2.5mg/kg legal limit. Tests revealed the cookies contained 4 and 5 mg/kg.
The country’s Food and Consumer Product Safety Authority said: “The cookies have been removed from the market", before adding the risk of becoming ill from eating them was “extremely small”.
It added: "Only with daily consumption of two kilograms of the cookies will children enter the danger zone."
The body said the cookies were only sold in Chinese shops. Its findings came to light after the agency tested a total of 47 Chinese products.
