22 October 2008 - German supermarket chain Edeka has announced the opening of 1,000 new outlets between 2008 and the end of 2010.
In a statement, the retailer said that it plans to open 200 new Edeka supermarkets and 150 Netto discount stores annually.
“We continue to expand and we are investing 1 billion euros to expand our network”, said Edeka spokesman Markus Mosa.
Meanwhile, rival retailer the Rewe Group is reportedly seeking to add 25,000 jobs in Germany as it plans to open 750 food stores across the country by 2014.
The company also plans to open new stores across Europe.
