2 December 2008 - Global chemical company Dow has recently introduced globally a new technology, which, according to the company, not only promotes healthy fat metabolism but also helps reduce weight gain and absorption of saturated and trans fats.
Moreover, it can also be easily formulated into various functional foods, such as beverages, dairy products, snack foods such as biscuits and bars, and ready meals.
Pre-clinical trials done in collaboration with the USDA’s Agricultural Research Service of the US Department of Agriculture (USDA), have so far shown promising results.
Research by Dow’s Food & Nutrition business indicates that SATISFIT™ Weight Care Technology demonstrated that:
- Trials conducted on animal models so far showed that when SATISFIT™ is used in hamburger or pound cake diets, animals achieved a 7% reduction in weight gain compared to a control diet.
- The studies also came to the conclusion that SATISFIT™ led to a reduced absorption of saturated fat in the animals.
- Consuming the weight management ingredient, in comparison with the control diet, also enabled the regulation of proper fat metabolism in tissues, helping to prevent fat build up.
- In addition, SATISFIT™ is 100% soluble, highly process tolerant, non-fermentable and can also help extend food product shelf life.
According to Dow, its plant-based cellulose ingredient does not add calories to formulations.
“SATISFIT™ is targeted to aid in the development of foods that can ‘satisfy’ in taste and texture, while also being compatible with consumers’ goals for ‘fitness’ and healthy eating,” said Stephanie Lynch, global marketing manager for Food & Nutrition at Health Ingredients Europe (HiE) in Paris, France, last month.
Dow is now looking for research development partners to begin human clinical trials with SATISFIT™.
