Feb 27 - Baby milk powder made by US company Wyeth has been cleared by Chinese authorities of containing unsafe levels of melamine.

The General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection, and Quarantine (AQSIQ) launched the probe after a number of Chinese consumers alleged the milk powder had caused kidney stones in children.

But the AQSIQ  investigation has cleared Wyeth’s products after tests showed they were in compliance with acceptable levels of melamine.

The US firm confirmed recently it had received complaints from some Chinese customers over allegations linking consumption of its milk to kidney stones but stressed its products were safe.

Earlier this month, officials in China also cleared Dumex,  a Danone-owned Chinese company, of producing melamine-tainted milk, after similar allegation were levelled against the firm.

The investigations come in the wake of the wide-spread contamination of baby milk last year in China which sickened 300,000 and killed at least six people. The industrial chemical was found to have been added to milk products to make them seem to contain more protein.
