Geng Jinping and Zhang Yujun began their second trial Thursday in the northern province of Hebei following their appeal against the death sentence verdict handed down by a judge in January.

The brothers of the two men were also said to be appealing against being sentenced to eight years in prison for their involvement in the food contamination incident that has been linked to several deaths and sickened around 300,000 people.

The retrial is expected to last one day, with the verdict due to be handed down in court, reports from state media Xinhua said.

In the first trial, the Geng brothers were found guilty of producing and selling toxic food, while the Zhang siblings were convicted of endangering public safety.
