Mexico City, June 11 - Mexico has so far produced 4,952,492 tonnes of sugar in the 2008/09 harvest, 9.83 percent less than in the same period last year, the National Cane Workers Union said on Thursday.
Sugar production for the week ended June 6 was 18,463 tonnes, down 69.38 percent from the 60,292 tonnes produced in the same period last year, according to figures from the union.
The union has said the country's 2008/09 sugar production will be 5.3 million tonnes, while the agriculture ministry forecast an even smaller crop in part because of bad weather.
