30 June 2009 - The Honduran Coffee Institute, or Ihcafe, has said it was deeply concerned over what the political and economic impact will be after the military coup on Sunday.

According to Ihcafe estimates, Honduran coffee production from the current 2008-09 harvest through June 15 was down 1.5% to 2,907,587 60-kilogram bags.

Honduras is one of Latin America's five largest producers of top-quality mild washed arabica beans.

Some 100,000 families in Honduras depend on coffee production for their daily subsistence, while the industry directly and indirectly feeds up to 10% of Honduras' population of about 7.8 million and accounts for 25% of rural employment, according to Ihcafe figures.
