Mumbai, Oct 12 - India's Shree Renuka Sugar will see output rising 70 percent in the year-ending September 2010 boosted by imports of raws, a senior official said on Monday.
Renuka, India's biggest sugar refiner, will produce 1.7 million tonnes of the sweetener in 2009/10, of which 70 percent will come from refining, the official who requested anonymity said. It produced about 1 million tonnes last year.
"We have cane scarcity this year. We are expanding our refining capacity and that will show in our output," he told Reuters.
India is facing a sugar deficit as a poor monsoon decimated the local cane crop forcing it to import a record 5 million tonnes of raw sugar in the just-ended crop year to September -- the same amount it exported a year earlier.
The company is also looking at expanding its footprint into Brazil, the world's biggest producer, and is in talks with a couple of players for possible acquisitions, he added.
"We are in talks with some companies there. The advantage of Brazil is you get your land for plantation, a crushing unit and distillery," the official said.
