Kenya: Higher Tea Production; Lower Coffee Output in 2005

26 May 2006 - The agricultural sector of economy made enormous growth in the year 2005. The agricultural value added at constant prices rose by 6.9% from a revised value of Ksh 269,876 million in 2004 to Ksh 288,528 million in 2005.

At the current prices, the agricultural output rose by 10.8% recording Ksh 438,394 million in the year 2005 up from Ksh 395,524 million in the year 2004.

Specific crop products:

  • Tea production increased by 1.2% from 324.6 thousand tonnes in 2004 to 328.5 thousand tonnes in the year 2005.
  • Coffee production declined by 6.6% from 48.4 thousand tonnes in 2003/4 to 45.2 thousand tonnes in the year 2004/5 crop year.
  • Maize production increased from a revised quantity of 29 million bags in 2004 to 32.3 million bags in 2005
