Unions went out on a two-day strike starting on Thursday to protest against the terms of the plan, halting production at the brewer and threatening supplies.

An InBev spokesman said management and unions had agreed on the terms of 40 lay-offs. He added that another 219 employees would either take early retirement or be offered another position within the InBev group. InBev said in a statement that the unions had pledged to stop strike action as soon as possible.

"The unions and InBev are convinced that stability and peaceful relations within the enterprise can be re-established," it said.
