Hamburg, Feb 21 - Giant German coffee roaster Tchibo said on Wednesday it plans to sell more so-called fair trade coffee and will make special promotions from Colombia and Brazil.
"We intend to significantly expand our involvement in sustainable coffee," said Tchibo spokesman Joachim Klaehn.
On Feb 26 the unlisted company will start a national promotion in Germany of new crop Colombian coffee of which at least 30 percent will be certified by the ethical and environment group Rainbow Alliance.
On Mar 19 it will start a national promotion of Brazilian coffee, all of which will be Rainbow Alliance-certified.
Tchibo currently worked with other sustainable production organisations including Fairtrade, the Common Code for the Coffee Community and International Coffee Partners.
The company was responding to demand for coffee produced under conditions which improved the environment and the social conditions of coffee farmers, Klaehn said.
