14 June 2007 - Canada's Streamline Foods has acquired a Unilever plant in Belleville, Ontario, reports the local media.
In February 2006, Unilever Canada announced it would close its Belleville Foodsolutions plant, cutting 140 jobs. Production at the plant was moved to Unilever's other manufacturing plants and to third-party contractors, the company said at the time. The Belleville plant produced a variety of dry mixes, including coffee, spices, and Oxo-brand bouillon cubes.
In recent months the facility attracted the attention of food processing companies and a pharmaceutical company, add the reports.
However, the city council opted for Streamline Foods as the company works in the same field as Unilever, therefore the plant would be ready for operations when purchased, meaning little inside work is needed. Furthermore, Streamline has already hired approximately 25 former Unilever employees.
Streamline is expected to begin production sometime this week, say the reports.
Based in Toronto, Streamline Foods manufactures high sugar content dry blends and packaged food products.
