10 July 2007 - Although Britain's Premier Foods announced last week it was considering closing 6 plants, one site, on the contrary, may be expanded.

According to the local press, Premier Foods’ plant in Bury St Edmunds, which produces ‘Branston Pickle’ and ‘Loyd Grossman’ sauces, will expand with the production of chutneys, pastes and cooking sauces. The production of these sauces will be transferred from the Wythenshaw, Manchester factory, which has been earmarked for closure.

The move would see 16 new jobs created at the Bury plant, which currently employs 360 people, adds the local press.

Last week, FLEXNEWS reported that Premier Foods was commencing consultation on proposals to close 6 of the 11 sites covered by its UK manufacturing review and invest significantly in the other 5 sites. 580 jobs could be cut nationwide.

A week later, Premier still stresses that the plans are still only proposals and staff would be consulted before any changes made.
